Sam Fender has handed over the complete sum of his £25k Mercury Prize prize money to the MVT, which operates to save the Britain's small music venues.

Fender was given the cheque on 16 October as his latest record his work was chosen as the top album of the previous year.

Fender has chosen to hand the money over to the trust, in appreciation of the essential function grassroots venues played in his beginning days.

"I would not have achieved this success if it weren't for all the gigs I did around the North East, and beyond, when I was starting out," remarked Sam Fender. "These locations are legendary, but they are struggling."

Beginning in 2023, over 150 of these venues have shut down – approximately 16% of the entire UK sector.

Over the past year, major artists including Pulp, Coldplay, Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all aided the trust in its initiatives to support the industry, by applying a modest fee to their admission fees, which goes to help independent venues.

Sam Fender also took part, raising more than £100,000 on his recent tour to assist thirty-eight grassroots venues across the UK.

The money helped venues that were confronting possible closure due to challenges stemming from water damage, fire incidents and personal losses, as well as regulatory hurdles, legal disputes and noise complaints.

Other venues were granted financial assistance in improving infrastructure and sound and lighting systems that positively impacted performers and fans.

"The concept that funds from shows in large arenas supports the independent spots, where it all starts for musicians like me, is just logical," Sam Fender has said.

"Winning was sufficient," remarked vocalist the singer. "The prize was the bonus but we could do without the cherry, because we had the main prize. So our victory touched the lives of others."

Last week, the Music Venues Trust revealed it had saved two grassroots venues in the South East, by bringing them into local control.
