They're Doing in America What They Did with Christianity

The Trump movement's most telling and defining moments – not its most crucial, nor cruelest, nor most threatening, nor most senseless, but possibly its most revealing – came earlier this autumn. During the period of several weeks, the American president started showing the public his designs for an ornate dance hall twice the size compared to the White House and subsequently started solo dismantling the East Wing to erect it.

He has committed acts ten thousand times worse – the existing assessment of fatalities resulting from his reductions to foreign assistance amounts to 600,000 and increasing, and this week an analysis predicted his energy policies would kill 1.3 million more. However nothing as distinctive. No former leader would have dared – truly, no other president would have contemplated – unilaterally destroying major areas of the presidential residence in order to erect a Versailles-style party room, with the active collaboration of multiple America's wealthiest, nearly all of which conduct transactions with federal agencies.

We moved from 'the gentle will obtain the planet' to 'the meek shall die from cholera'

As confusing as it is to watch the president attempt to overturn the traditional concept about democracy and replace it with its direct contrary, there exists a significant segment among Americans who might not perceive it totally unfamiliar. That encompasses people such as ourselves – in older age cohorts almost a majority – who were educated as conventional Protestant believers.

We have watched across decades as politically conservative religious groups converted the Savior we learned about into the total contrary of our understanding of him. Essentially, they transformed an image of affection into a figure of animosity who blesses exactly the harshness that he criticized in the Gospel; this transformation occurred at a slower pace, across decades as opposed to months, but it is nonetheless disturbing through similar means, a bewildering emotional blow for many of us.

A Harmful Christianity Gains Ground

So let me first describe the Christ that I grew up with, as conceptually Jesus is the center of Christian religion, and because the quickly increasing segment among Americans could have minimal awareness about him as they consider themselves atheists or doubters or nones. I take no issue with these various perspectives, nor with alternative spiritual paths; yet I maintain that there are pearls of significant worth in biblical accounts.

It is unquestionably definitely not the story of a mighty king appearing; instead, a baby is born to homeless parents in a garage, who must quickly flee to a foreign land to escape secret police. The baby grows up in simple surroundings, an employed craftsman; his teaching is about love for others, particularly for the impoverished – not merely emotional affection, but a concrete one, demonstrated through nourishing and sheltering. Jesus' answer to aggression is to offer the other cheek – not as a gesture of submissive tolerance, but as a means to teach the aggressor; his method regarding offenses states that when a person pilfers your jacket you ought to provide him your sweater too.

The obvious and direct fact that Christ in biblical accounts advocates for a form of profound affection focused on the poor has perpetually caused the Christian faith something of a provocative belief system: appealing to the populace, but owing to its inherent radicalness demanding to be restrained. During the 1950s it was contained via weakening – The Protestant faith was so prevalent that it practically blessed current circumstances.

A Conflict for the Highest Within Us

Therefore I have felt heartened to see the determined opposition against Trump emerge over the last twelve months. It has provided significant comfort to participate in developing the campaign that has taken to the streets through repeated demonstrations, and seems to have inspired citizens to participate in large quantities during minor elections. We will need to persist with it, and through comparable resolve, with American flags at every demonstration and appeals to the best parts of American history.

We're going to be asked ... regarding how you welcomed the stranger? Did you accept these individuals and receive them or reject?

The country is optimally secured, essentially, through connection to the finest in US heritage, just as Christianity is optimally secured by reference to elements that cause it to be unique and magnificent, specifically the model of the Savior. In neither case does it suggest feigning the most negative of both America and religious tradition never occurred; it means both humility and conviction, a combination that serious US believers should embrace.
