Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Remarks

The English opener Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of statements from captain Stokes about the team environment not being "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes made those words in multiple conversations following England's defeat in the second Ashes series versus Australia previously.

Ahead of the third Test, where the visitors now face a series loss at the earliest opportunity, Stokes stated he had allowed his message to "circulate freely" among the squad.

"I've done all the talking in recent days that I needed to have done," remarked Stokes.

However, after Crawley scored a knock of 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take anything stated in the media with a pinch of salt," he added.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

The captain issued his "fragile individuals" comment subsequent to his side suffered a loss in Brisbane to fall two matches behind.

The team subsequently took a holiday to a Queensland resort between the second and the upcoming matches.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, he said his players had held "raw" conversations and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their effort to remain alive in the Ashes battle.

Yet, Crawley asserted the messaging from Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum had remained consistent with their prior three years in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, unchanged," said the opener. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, play our way, with great liberty. It felt like we were capable of something special going into this Test."

The Hosts On the Verge of Historic Series Victory

Crawley's dismissal late on Saturday was part of a decisive three-wicket burst by Australian spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in a short spell – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – left the chasing side six down for 207 in pursuit of a daunting total of 435.

This means, the home team require four wickets on the final day to move to an unassailable three-nil advantage after three Tests.

Defeat would prolong England's drought in this country to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth straight away Ashes loss.

This series is set to be decided in just 11 days of cricket – after England fell the first two Tests in rapid time each.

The last time 1921, when the Australians sealed a series win in England in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been determined more swiftly. Australia have also triumphed in eleven days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"This is disappointing," said the batsman. "We came here to regain the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel at this point."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we'll certainly approach it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been difficult. Australia is a very, very good side. It was always going to be hard coming here to face them. They were the front-runners and have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Position In Question

While the opener's performance in the third Test likely secures questions about his immediate place in the side, Pope appears under immense pressure for his spot in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 in England's second knock on day four, extending his modest returns against Australia.

In 16 Ashes innings, Pope has never made a fifty and averages just 17.62.

A solitary other England player since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has played as many times in the top order in the Ashes and returned a poorer average.

However, the opener insisted any suggestion Pope is under the microscope originates with "the media" – referring to the press – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," said he. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year to be frank."

"He has played some really good knocks. This is noise externally. There is no chat like that on Ollie in the camp," Crawley finished.
